Les recherches initiales effectuées par les laboratoires de Red Sea ont montré que, dans le système fermé d’un aquarium, des proportions spécifiques des éléments fondamentaux que sont le calcium, le magnésium et les carbonates (alcalinité) sont nécessaires à la vitalité du corail et à une robuste formation de leur squelette en aragonite. Ces proportions doivent être tout particulièrement maintenues au cas où les niveaux des éléments fondamentaux deviennent supérieurs aux niveaux du milieu naturel.
Les sels Red Sea sont conçus en fonction de cet équilibre idéal et peuvent éviter d’avoir à ajuster les niveaux des éléments fondamentaux après les changements d’eau. Cela accroît nettement le confort des coraux.
